The Bowling Green State University Club Hockey is made up of 28-32 players, including 3 to 4 goalies. The team is composed of students who still want to play hockey competitively, but work toward a college degree.
The 2010-11 season will be very exciting for the BG team. The club won its league championship in 2006-07 in the now disbanded Great Lakes Intercollegiate Hockey Association. The team competes at the ACHA DII level and is focused on playing at a premiere level.
The 2010-11 season looks to be one of the toughest in our history. There are 30-35 games projected, plus an additional 3-8 if we advance in various tournaments and qualify for the regional and national tournaments. Last year was the organization's first time advancing to the ACHA DII National Tournament.
The club practices three nights a week, with times generally being later on at night (9:00 pm) due to very little availability in the ice time schedule. However, it works out well because it allows the players time to study and work if needed.
There are games almost every weekend from mid-September through early March. Depending on the year, there are usually about 18 home games, meaning the other 18-21 games are away. With trips more than two hours away, the club rents three vans and hotel rooms for the players. Trips within two hours feature the carpool method. Games within 2 hours are usually played as a home-and-home series. Our schedule usually features games in Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
Club players pay $1,000 in dues, which is relatively cheap for a traveling collegiate hockey team. This money covers everything: league affiliation dues, USA Hockey insurance, ice time, referees, jerseys, socks and transportation and hotel costs. Things not covered by the dues include: players' equipment, food on road trips, and any additional expenses if the team advances to the national tournament.
Bowling Green State University also offers an adequate intramural program. There are different leagues ranging from club players to beginning skaters.
This is NOT the varsity team. The club team cannot afford to recruit players. The club is simply comprised of players who want to play hockey at a competitive level and enjoy the complete college experience.
